The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio
(or how my mother raised 10 children on 25 words or less)
For anyone who grew up in the 50's or 60's this will bring back a lot of memories...for anyone else it gives a great picture of growing up in simpler(and poorer) times...it was hard to see the difficulties caused by the alcoholic father...but inspiring to see how a mom's wonderfully positive attitude pulled her family through hard times...it's amazing the prizes she won "back in the day" when "contesting" was a way of life
Evelyn Ryan's writing wasn't great literature but her life is the essence of "indefatigable."
Fielder's Choice
There are moms who can cook,
And moms who can sew,
And moms who will come
When they're beckoned;
But give me that pearl
Of a mom--type girl...
A mom who can slide
Into second.
(She won $5 from the Denver Post)
An entry into a Dial soap contest:
I'm glad I use Dial;
Hallelujah,
Now I don't smell
So peculiah.
Another poem:
Fitting Advice
Of all sad words,
Give these the prize:
"My dear,
You'll need
Our larger size."
A week before her death (at age 85) she wrote:
Every time I pass the church
I stop and make a visit
so when I'm carried in feet first
God won't say, "Who is it?"

Lionesses At the Gate
From our RS lesson last Sunday....
Sister Beck said, "The ability to qualify for, receive and act on personal revelation is the single most important skill that can be acquired in this life. When we have that spirit we can walk with God and make proper choices, we can know what to do. Education is wonderful, but being able to feel the Lord's power and spirit upon us is the ultimate education we can receive."

Ever Ready Bran Muffins
This recipe has been around a long time....here it is with a few suggestions to make it healthier:
EveryReady Bran Muffins
2 C raisins
2 C boiling water
2 C boiling water
5 C All-Bran cereal (I used Bran Buds)
3 C sugar (cut to 2 C sugar and/or substitute with part honey or molasses)
1 C oil (cut to 1/2 C oil + 1/2 C applesauce, or all applesauce)
4 eggs
1 quart buttermilk
1 quart buttermilk
5 C flour (half whole wheat)
5 t baking soda
Mix the raisins and boiling water with 2 C of the cereal. Set aside to cool.
In a large bowl, mix the sugar, oil(applesauce).
Stir in eggs, buttermilk and remaining 3 C cereal.
Mix flour with baking soda and add to mix along with bran-raisin mix. This makes 48 muffins.
You can put it in 4 quart jars each of which will make 12 muffins. Or use plastic storage containers. It will keep for six weeks...bake muffins at 400 about 15 minutes.

Who Will Teach?
I wrote this a long time ago (1984???)when I was the Primary President and was trying to get a new teacher for a Star A class (4 year olds). I kept turning in names...but went through several rejections....I wrote this and just gave it to Brother Clayton Johnson who was the counselor in the Bishopric in charge of the Primary...just to kind of get rid of my frustration...then misplaced it for years....a couple years ago JoAnne G found a copy in her files and gave it back to me...so I'm going to post it here so I don't lose it again. You can tell I was pretty bummed about all the rejections...it's a good thing it didn't get wide circulation in the ward or I'm sure I would have offended a lot of people!
Who Will Teach?
Who will teach the children?
Oh--don't ask me to teach Primary.
My children are all grown.
I've worked in Primary for years.
I've done my time.
Who will teach the children?
Me? You're calling me to Primary?
I have three pre-school children
and three in grade school
I need a rest on Sunday.
I'll teach when my children are older.
Who will teach the children?
You want me to teach the Sunbeams?
Why, I have three advanced degrees.
My talents would be wasted in Primary.
Who will teach the children?
Oh, not me!
I couldn't give up my Relief Society calling.
It's so much easier with my hectic schedule
to just teach once a month.
And when would I see my friends?
Who will teach the children?
Somewhere out there in a Star A class is a future Prophet of the Lord.
Who will set his tiny feet on the proper path at an early age?
Somewhere in those Sunbeam or CTR or Valiant classes are the missionaries who will one day go forth to serve.
Who will teach them the Gospel principles that must be spread throughout the world?
Somewhere in those Merry Miss and Blazer classes are our sons and daughters who we parents pray will one day enter the Holy Temple and be sealed to a worthy mate.
Who will build their testimonies strong enough to help them preserve their purity throughout the often turbulent teenage years?
Who will teach the children?
Service is not always convenient.
Service is seldom easy.
Service is not necessarily fun.
Service is sacrifice.
If not you--who will teach the children?
